Wigan South’s Quality Group has been working hard to give people that IAS supports to have a further voice. They are a mixed group of tenants, Managers, Support Workers and a family member that are visiting the homes of people IAS support to talk to them, find out what’s happening for them and what sort of lives they have, want and look at how this can be improved. The quality group also finds out how life is for the staff to ensure they are supported.

These visits are shared out amongst the quality group, and during the visit a “Review” tool is used. This was developed in Wigan South’s SDF, so it was developed with a lot of peoples input.

Each member of the quality team brings a different insight. For example Robyn Mawdsley, a support worker, who had recently done her first review visit, experienced how things were in another person’s home other that where she worked, and Helen Rowlinson who is the parent of someone IAS supports feels like she can view things from a different outlook than the IAS staff can.

The review though isn’t about a check list of basic requirements, Wigan South Senior Manager; Nuala Collier says “it’s about exploring further avenues for the people we support are they getting the lives they want, a fair share of the rota.

Team Leader, Kath Gregory says that “its really important work”. The rest of the group agree saying that this work is very beneficial and is about challenging ourselves.

In fact CQC agree, commenting at their inspection visit that it was a good initiative. This initiative is now being rolled out to Wigan North and will be rolled out to Salford in the future.
