The Wednesday Club started in June 2011 and is run by three IAS support workers, Simon Battersby, Steve Connor and Angela Pitchford. They had the idea of the club and then took it to their SDF meeting to discuss it and make it reality.
The club’s aim is to create a comfortable environment with a good vibe and lively atmosphere where people IAS support can meet and spend time together, socialising or taking part in various activities.
The Wednesday club is trying to offer an alternative from the usual day centre idea. Peopl e can visit and do what they want at the club. Simon says that people come here and are forming new friendships and broadening their horizons. Steve can see people coming out of their shell and increasing in confidence, and Angela sees people doing new things and no longer holding back, but getting involved. They all feel like the club has come a long way in a short time.
Michelle attends every week. She says it’s great and enjoys playing games with others. Jenny also attends every week and says “it’s really exciting here and I’ve got a good group of mates here”. Geoff likes coming every week and getting out and about and spending time with people.
Many of the people that attend now come to the club without support and everyone mixes and enjoys each other’s company.
Simon says the next step will be looking at activities that involve people in the community, such as people joining a local fishing group or walking club.
The club runs every Wednesday 10am – 3pm at Lowton Youth Club, admission is £3.00 and includes lunch.
